Here’s a link to an innovative idea. I subscribe to the NYT Education section with my google reader, and I found this article. I am a huge fan of taking things that interest kids and finding a way to teach the standards around their interests.

This was a great article. I could “feel” exactly what the author was saying. I have been an “elective” teacher for many years. I have found that finding and teaching things that sparks children’s interest definitely carries over into everything they do!

Isn’t this the essence of what educator strive for; students making real life connections to the “standard” that we teach. What a fun way to do this. This is one of the reason’s I love teaching science because the venues to life relativity are endless.
How about the student who was just looking for a new sport. That’s was life long learning should be a quest for something new that turns into a pleasurable, measurable, and applicable gaining of knowledge.
Thanks for this submission.
